Celebrities Love Secret Engagements

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Celebrity engagement rumor:  Tony Romo, football player and ex boyfriend to Jessica Simpson gives his new girlfriend, Candace Crawford, an engagement ring!  Wait…doesn’t this mean that they are, in fact, engaged?  Some say that Romo’s gift to Crawford was just a ring, and not an engagement ring, but if you wear a diamond ring on the third finger of your left hand doesn’t it stand to reason that you are planning to get married?  Why is it that celebrities work so hard to keep their engagements from reaching the press?  Isn’t the act of becoming engaged itself a declaration of your intentions to marry? I would think that if a couple didn’t want the world to know they were going to be wed, they would wait to become engaged until they are ready for the announcement.  What is the point of marriage if not to broadcast the fact that you have chosen this person to spend the rest of your life with?

The web and tabloid stands are full of celebrity engagement gossip. Pop singer Katy Perry’s boyfriend Russell Brand is rumored to be engagement ring shopping at London’s Cartier, but are they going to tie the knot after her evening cozying up to British comedian Robert Pattinson and a group of friends?

Jennifer Lopez wore her amazing eight-carat square cut diamond ring on her middle finger and denied engagement to Marc Anthony.  Their wedding was kept under wraps, and it wasn’t until months later that Lopez and Anthony admitted the union.  I can understand wanting privacy during the ceremony, but again, why keep their marriage a secret after the fact?  Eventually don’t you want the world to know?

For two months actress Rachel Bilson kept her engagement to fellow actor Hayden Christensen a secret.  It wasn’t until a man on an airplane noticed the engagement ring on her finger that she revealed that they were planning to wed.  Again, why the secrecy?  Are stars afraid if the news of their engagements leaks out to the public it will jinx their chances of success?  I think if they want to keep their engagements private then they shouldn’t wear a diamond engagement ring in public.

Secret engagements are not always the standard for stars, however. Some celebrities are not so timid when it comes to love.  When Chelsea Clinton and her now fiancé Marc Mezvinsky became engaged this past November, they weren’t afraid of announcing the big news at all.  In fact, they sent out a mass email to their friends and family!  I don’t know how classy that is, but at least they let the people close to them share in their excitement.

For singer Jennifer Hudson, one proposal was not enough.  Four months after her pro wrestler fiancé David Otunga popped the question on her 27thbirthday, she surprised him.  Apparently Hudson wanted Otunga to realize how much she was looking forward to their wedding, she secretly had a fabulous man’s five-carat diamond engagement ring custom designed by Neil Lane, and proposed to him!

Celebrity Inspired Engagement Rings

When a celebrity couple announces their engagement, hungry fans eagerly await the first photos of the bride-to-be’s engagement ring. While it would be wonderful to be able to have such gems, most non-celebrity couples simply cannot afford the big, expensive rings celebrities seem to covet. Luckily, the advent of celebrity inspired replica rings has enabled regular couples to have a shot at the beautiful baubles celebrities are known for – without the hefty price tag!

Celebrity Replica Engagement Rings

A celebrity replica ring is a copy of the original ring, but has a few differences that make the design accessible to the average couple. However, very rarely are celebrity replica rings an exact copy of the original. Thankfully, you have a couple of choices if you’re intent on owning a copy of a celebrity engagement ring for yourself.

Celebrity Inspired Rings are similar to the actual celebrity ring, but are not an exact copy. Instead, there are several similarities between stones, settings and other details that make it an identifiable “copy” of the original ring.

Celebrity Knock-off’s, on the other hand, can be similar to a celebrity engagement ring, but are often created based on rumors, gossip and a few photographs rather than true facts.

The type of celebrity replica ring you’ll choose will be based on how authentic you wish the ring to be, as well as your budget and personal preferences.

Types of Replica Rings

The average bride-to-be leads an active lifestyle between work, home life and other day to day necessities. With that being said, an exact copy of a celebrity engagement ring would be completely impractical because of their large size and expensive price tag. Because of this, celebrity engagement ring replicas design the ring to be practical for the every day woman while still maintaining the essence of the original ring.

Size

Most celebrity rings are huge, so celebrity replicas take this into consideration and size down the ring. What this means is that they keep the overall design but scale down the carat size to create a more practical engagement ring. Even with particularly elaborate designs, while some of the original stones or other designs may be lost in a smaller size, the ring will still be reminiscent of the original celebrity style.

Price

As you already know, celebrity engagement rings are ridiculously expensive, but you can still find an authentic replica without the hefty price tag.

You can keep the overall appearance of a celebrity replica, but use lower quality stones or synthetic diamonds and gemstones as accent stones or a center stone to help decrease the price. Choosing a cheaper metal, such as white gold, can also help lower the price while still remaining visually authentic to the celebrity design.

A celebrity inspired engagement ring replica may be the perfect choice for the bride-to-be who wants to bring a bit of flash to her finger. Even if you don’t have the budget of a celebrity, you can still look like you do with a replica ring!

2009 Trends in Celebrity Engagement Rings

Celebrities influence nearly everything we do, from picking out clothes to styling our hair;  from decorating our homes to selecting products we use. They even influence our engagements and weddings- so it should come as no surprise that we are a little obsessed with celebrity engagement rings. Celebrity engagement rings often give enamored fans a little glimpse of their personal taste and thus their personality. Who wouldn’t like to say that their engagement ring was inspired by their favorite celebrity’s engagement ring?  Many celebrity engagement rings are custom made, and while most of us do not have the money to get an exact replica, we can find some pretty close versions of the glamorous baubles. Some rings may be vintage, others more modern, but all of them evoke glamour.

Here are three celebrity engagement ring trends of 2009

Solitaire Rings- One diamond doesn’t have to be lonely. Solitary diamonds or jewels can come in many different colors(though white diamonds are always preferred) and shapes including princess cut and square. Fergie’s engagement ring is a simple brilliant diamond solitaire ring. Another idea is to have the band in small pave stones and a large solitaire diamond in the center surrounded by more pave stones- a style that is a lot like the engagement rings that grace the fingers of Natasha Beddingfield and Amy Adams.

Vintage Inspired Rings- Why look forward to the future when you can look to the past for inspiration? Courtney Ford’s square cushioned cut diamond ring surrounded by smaller cut diamonds is 1920’s art-deco inspired. Melania Knauss’s engagement ring was also in bit art-deco with a simple emerald cut diamond solitaire- a lot like the ring Ashlee Simpson chose. Tameka Foster’s ring is inspired by British royalty of the past with a classic Asscher cut, which is a square cut diamond with diagonal cropped corners. And former first daughter Jenna Bush chose an antique ring with a round center stone and two smaller sapphires on either side.

Colored Stone Rings- Even though white diamonds are standard, many celebrities are also choosing more colorful baubles that reflect their personality. And right now, colorful jewelry is a huge trend thanks to the 2009 Oscars.  A lot of these colorful baubles are diamonds, which is a rare find. Yellow is a common color of many celebrity engagement rings, Rebecca Romjin, Heidi Klum, Katherine McPhee and Brooke Mueller all wore yellow diamond engagement rings.  Carmen Electra goes for a more Goth route by single black diamond solitaire engagement ring. Mariah Carey’s engagement ring is pink emerald cut diamond that is flanked by two half-moon cut diamonds on either side.

Remember that no matter what celebrity engagement ring trend you choose, you should also choose a ring that reflects your (or your bride-to-be’s) personality. Unlike most jewelry, an engagement ring is more personal and significant, so it would be a good idea to some research. Engagement rings are also a reflection of your relationship, so it is crucial to select the right ring.
